Anatomical basis for the interposition of a gastric pouch between the ileum and the anus after total proctocolectomy.

After a total proctocolectomy, ileoanal continuity is achieved by an ileal pouch–anal anastomosis. This anastomosis is not possible when the ileum cannot reach the anus. To avoid definitive ileostomy in this circumstance, we devised a gastric pouch, taken from the left half of the vertical portion of the stomach, vascularized by the right gastroepiploic pedicle, then interposed it between the ileum and the anus. The aim of this anatomical study on seven cadavers was to estimate the capacity of this gastric pouch to reach the anus. Current global economic crisis imposes healthcare system to reduce unnecessary investigations and increase early detection of tumors, to decrease the costs of an advanced disease. Several diagnostic pitfalls may occur dealing with bladder cancer (BC), particularly in nonmuscle-invasive (NMIBC) one. Hematuria, the commonest sign in NMIBC, is often underestimated. Urinary cytology is highly specific for high-grade tumors, but has a low sensitivity for low-grade BC, is operator dependent, and not always obtainable in clinical practice. Osteoblastic osteogenic sarcoma in a 13-month-old girl.

Summary Osteosarcoma is exceptional in early periods of life. Therefore osteosarcomas involvingthe bones of the hand are extremely rare. We present a case of an osteogenic sarcoma involving the second metacarpal bone of a 13-month-old girl who has been remaining free of disease, after treatment — radial amputation and chemotherapy pre- and post-operative-, for a period of 10 years in the follow-up.

Leishmaniasis is a parasitic infection affecting ∼12 million people worldwide, mostly in developing countries. Treatment options are limited and no effective vaccines exist to date. Natural Killer T (NKT) cells are a conserved innate-like lymphocyte population with immunomodulating effects in various settings. A number of reports state a role of NKT cells in different models of Leishmania infection. Cytokine expression profile in idiopathic inflammatory myopathies.

Cytokines have been shown to be potent inducers of major histocompatibility complexes (MHC) class I and II as well as of cell adhesion molecules in muscle tissue cultures, indicating that cytokines may play a role in mediating muscle fiber damage in inflammatory myopathies. We found in 21 cases of autoimmune myositis various amounts of inflammatory cells expressing interleukin (IL)-1 alpha and -beta, IL-2, IL-4, tumor necrosis factor (TNF) -alpha and -beta, and interferon (IFN)-gamma and its receptor. SATB2 is commonly expressed in osteosarcomas. Although apparently being a valuable diagnostic marker for differentiating between small cell osteosarcoma (SCO) and other small round cell tumors of bone, for instance Ewing sarcoma family of tumors (ESFT), it has not been tested in a large series of ESFT and chondrosarcomas so far. We studied the immunohistochemical expression of SATB2 in 42 osteosarcomas, 31 chondrosarcomas, and 371 genetically confirmed ESFT. Abnormalities in alpha-dystroglycan expression in MDC1C and LGMD2I muscular dystrophies

We recently identified mutations in the fukutin related protein (FKRP) gene in patients with congenital muscular dystrophy type 1C (MDC1C) and limb girdle muscular dystrophy type 2I (LGMD2I). The sarcolemma of these patients typically displays an immunocytochemical reduction of alpha-dystroglycan. In this report we extend these observations and report a clear correlation between the residual expression of alpha-dystroglycan and the phenotype. Three broad categories were identified. Chemical heterogeneity of amyloid in the carpal tunnel syndrome

140 biopsies from 108 patients afflicted with the carpal tunnel syndrome were studied, 27 of whom showed deposition of amyloid, in 6 of them to such an extent that the amyloid was considered significant in the pathogenesis of the carpal tunnel syndrome. Morphologically, vessels and ligaments were affected and especially the peritendinous structures. As it was always part of generalized amyloidosis, the amyloid in the carpal tunnel consisted immunohistologically of amyloid A in three cases (including one case with simultaneous amyloid deposition of the AA- and the AB-type), of amyloid A kappa in one case, of amyloid of prealbumin origin in seventeen cases and of AB-amyloid in eight cases. Altered (oxidized) C1q induces a rheumatoid arthritis-like destructive and chronic inflammation in joint structures in arthritis-susceptible rats.

Previous studies have identified an altered C1q molecule in synovial fluids from the joints of rheumatoid arthritis patients. We therefore immunized arthritis-susceptible Lewis 1A.AVN rats with either native C1q (C1q nat), altered (oxidized) C1q (C1q ox), or type II collagen (CII, induces arthritis in these animals), in order to induce arthritis. Unlike C1q nat, both CII and C1q ox were able to induce swelling and erythema of joints consistent with an arthritis-like inflammatory reaction.
